An alternative to traditional braces, clear aligners are a series of custom-made transparent trays that fit over the teeth. Here at Cinema Orthodontics we use Invisalign, which is the most popular brand of aligners used by orthodontists today. Clear aligners are great because they offer a clearer, less noticeable alternative to braces and do not interfere with brushing and flossing. While aligners have come a long way in recent years and can treat a wide variety of orthodontic issues, not everyone is a candidate for them. Dr. Miyamoto and Dr. Tamashiro will go over your specific needs and discuss both braces and aligners at our treatment planning appointment so you can make a comfortable, informed decision for you or your child.

How Do Aligners Work?

Aligner trays come in a series, with each tray gradually moving the teeth toward the end result. They should be worn throughout the day, except when eating and brushing, for at least 22 hours per day. If the teeth are shifting as expected, then the aligners will be changed out for the next set. We will be scheduling regular appointments to monitor the progress of your treatment, but oftentimes our aligner patients come to our office in less frequent intervals than our patients with braces. Like with braces, retainers will be needed to keep your new smile in place after your treatment is completed.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Clear Aligners?

A great candidate for clear aligner therapy starts with anyone who is motivated to improve their smile! Aligner technology has advanced tremendously over the years and can be used to treat most common orthodontic issues. Some complex cases are not good candidates for aligners, however, so a consultation with Dr. Miyamoto and Dr. Tamashiro is essential to see if aligners are a good option for you.

What Are the Benefits of Clear Aligners?

One of the main benefits of aligners is hygiene. Unlike braces, aligners can be easily removed at home to facilitate brushing and flossing. This allows patients to maintain their normal oral hygiene practices throughout their orthodontic treatment.

Another major benefit of clear aligners is esthetics. Although many patients like the looks of braces, some prefer the idea of having a less-noticeable method of treatment. These trays are not completely invisible, but the clear plastic is significantly more subtle than traditional brackets and wires.

One other major benefit of aligners is convenience. Our aligner patients typically come in to see us less frequently than our patients with braces. Since you can switch out the trays at home, you can move forward with your aligners without coming into our office as often. We still schedule regular visits to monitor your progress, but these visits are usually at longer intervals.
